High School Version

WAR STORIES - A Salute in words and music for high schools

Registration number 137/08

The hardest concept to teach children about war is that soldiers were boys of their age, sixteen and older. "War Stories" presents in story and song form a brief but compelling historical survey of Australians at War, from the Boer War to the latest Terrorist threat.

It presents in chronological order, stories in oral and song form from all the major wars Australians have made a contribution to.

The show was written by Ken McBeath, National and State award winner for Excellence in teaching. Ken is currently Head Teacher of Performing Arts, Campbelltown High School. War Stories is presented by award winning performer Darren Coggan www.darrencoggan.com

Many of the songs in this show present the war experiences of those sidelined by the bronzed male ANZAC mythology such as women and indigenous soldiers. It’s focus is to present both small and personal stories, footnote-like, that are outside the big, simple mainstream history of Australian’s at War and to make these chapters of our military history more personal and accessible to students.

The style is contemporary; the songs are strong and varied, tailored to enhance many areas of the high school curriculum. Appropriate for years 7 – 12.

This performance is an authorised performance within the Performances for Schools program managed through the NSW Department of Education and Training. Registration number 137/08, verification of registration may be viewed at www.schools.edu.au/pfs
